Translating to “floating home”, the Hale Lana House takes inspiration from its namesake with a hovering design. The 17,200-square-foot retreat is spread throughout a series of pavilions that appear to float above the landscape on Hawaii’s Big Island. Connected by a network of elevated wooden lanais, the individual structures are small in scale, creating a collection of intimate living spaces for a couple or one sprawling estate for extended family. Each one is topped with a cantilevered double-pitch roof protecting the interiors and surrounding areas from the harsh sun and rain. To take advantage of the pristine location, the main house is enclosed by sliding window walls. The expansive glazing affords views of the property’s gardens and lava fields as well as the Haleakalā volcano in the distance while also encouraging rooms to flow to the outdoors.
