Bowen Island Forest House | Uncrate

Just an hour from Vancouver, Bowen Island is an ideal refuge from the city. SMS Studio’s utilizes the island’s desinse forest to create a nature-infused retreat. The Forest House highlights its surroundings while minimizing its disruption to the environment with a light footprint. Its concrete foundation integrates into the existing granite bedrock, appearing as if the structure is resting on the rocks. A black timber facade mimics the surrounding tree trunks, allowing the exterior to fade into the scenery. Internally, a neutral palette of Douglas Fir plywood, Western Red Cedar, and concrete develops warm, minimal living spaces. Skylights allow natural light to pour in from above, and large glazed panels keep the interior connected to the outdoors.
