When it launched in 2010, the New Balance 2002 was a $250 luxury running shoe, packed with innovation. In 2020, New Balance Japan’s Tetsuya Shono decided to rework the sneaker using the 860v2 as a base, and the 2002R was born. The modern update is built atop an Abzorb midsole with SBS heel cushioning and an N-ergy outsole for modern-day bounce and comfort. In Protection Pack form, it also gets a raw-edged nubuck upper that has a heavily worn look, set atop a ripstop base with leather accents around the toe. This grey and dark purple colorway give the shoe a trail-like vibe, which is completed with cord-style laces and a lock at the top.
