2024 Ducati DesertX Rally Motorcycle

Riding the Dakar craze of the 1980s, Italian manufacturer Cagiva struck a deal with then state-controlled Ducati to provide 650cc engines for three of its bikes: The sport-focused Allazzura, the Indiana cruiser, and the dual-sport Elefant. The partnership struck gold with rider Edi Orioli, winning the Dakar in 1990 and 1994 a larger version of the L-twin. With the upcoming DesertX Rally, Ducati looks poised to make a return to the famous race. Based on the DesertX, the DesertX Rally uses the same 937cc L-twin that powers the standard model, Hypermotard 950, Monster, and Supersport 950, making 108 horsepower and 68 lb-ft of torque. The upgrades begin with a billet triple clamp and Ohlins steering damper. A 48mm KYB front fork has nearly an inch more travel, while a revised rear pivot and KYB damper add the same amount of rear suspension travel. A thinner front mudguard sits higher up to avoid debris filling the radiator, while the riding modes have been recalibrated to the increased ride height. A forged carbon skidplate protects the engine, and Takasago Excel Wheels used lighter tube tires. The DesertX Rally will arrive at dealers in time for riding season in Spring 2024.
