Don’t let the swoopy Italian bodywork fool you — underneath is an all-American heart. The Ares S1 Gullwing is an American in an Italian suit, with the C8 Corvette’s chassis, firewall, floor, engine and transmission. Ares sells the unused parts to help reduce costs, although the car still clocks in at $1 million. The 6.2-liter V8 gets a mild tune making 35 more horsepower for a total of 530, and the new bodywork helps reduce weight by a massive 550 pounds — enough to make a marked improvement on performance. The interior is as unique as the bodywork, with the buttress separating the Corvette’s cockpit gone in favor a twin-cowl design that’s elegant in its simplicity — and a throwback to the C2 Corvette. Ares plans a production run of just 100 S1s.
