Rivian has unveiled not only the expected R2 midsize SUV, but also surprised with the introduction of their previously unannounced smaller SUV, the R3, along with its performance variant, the R3X (in the few hours since the event these two are already dominating social media). These vehicles represent a bold step forward in Rivian’s mission to deliver sustainable, adventure-ready vehicles to a wider audience. Reservations can now be made for the R2 for $100; its starting price is $45,000 and it will deliver in the first half of 2026.

“Today, we are thrilled to introduce our new midsize platform and the R2, R3 and R3X models that it underpins,” announced RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s visionary CEO. “These vehicles embody our commitment to providing exceptional performance, capability and utility in every aspect of their design.”

The R2 midsize SUV seamlessly blends performance, capability and utility into a practical five-seat design. Its distinctive Rivian silhouette and front end are complemented by a powered rear glass window that effortlessly lowers into the liftgate, facilitating gear transport. “The R2 is designed for those who demand both adventure and everyday practicality,” said Scaringe. “Its versatile interior and innovative features make it the perfect companion for weekend getaways, family road trips or simply navigating the daily grind.” For those who schlep and clamp, there are many great accessories that improve your journey. And with ALL interior seats folding flat, you have a very large cargo space or indoor sleeping area with a full-width mattress.

The unexpected R3 is a midsize crossover with more compact dimensions, impressive performance, off-road capabilities, passenger comfort and ample storage. Its bold exterior and inviting interior exude a sense of adventure and style. “The R3 is perfect for those who want a vehicle that can handle both urban environments and outdoor excursions with equal aplomb,” commented Scaringe. “Its versatility and performance make it an ideal choice for families, outdoor enthusiasts and anyone who values both style and substance.” Though a range was not given, the price will start lower than the R2’s $45,000 base, and deliveries are targeted for the second half of 2026.

“The R3X is designed for those who demand the ultimate driving experience. Its exceptional performance and off-road capabilities make it the perfect choice for adrenaline seekers and adventure enthusiasts alike,” said Scaringe. The R3X is cuter, and fans of vintage AMCs, GTIs and Hillman Imps will find enough of a vibe to put a smile on their face.

Both the R2 and R3 will feature two battery pack options, including a larger pack that will enable a range of over 300 miles on a single charge. The quickest powertrain variant will offer faster acceleration, reaching 0-60 mph in under three seconds. “Our commitment to innovation extends to every aspect of our vehicles. The shared platform and advanced technologies in the R2 and R3 ensure that both models deliver an exceptional driving experience that is unmatched in their respective segments,” noted Scaringe.

With the introduction of the R2, R3 and R3X, Rivian demonstrates its unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle design. These groundbreaking vehicles offer a compelling combination of performance, capability and versatility, making them a solid choice for adventurers and everyday drivers alike.
